Plans are underway to premiere our film Fistula Is Not A Curse this Friday night in the village of one of our Safe Motherhood Ambassadors in rural Tigray. The logistics have not been easy as there are no movie theaters or even electricity...so we're renting a generator and portable screen. The film produced in association with UNICEF follows the story of Amleset, a woman with fistula and her relationship with Letay, her husband's new wife who is pregnant as they travel to Mekelle to seek a cure and safe delivery. Then Sat, we've organized another large Community Engagement event in Enderta Woreda (the newest county we've started to work in and train SMAs) with the live drama and advocacy workshop inviting the community leaders, health workers and midwives. All this will be filmed by UNICEF/UNFPA. A recent volcano in Eritrea (that hasn't erupted in over 150 years) has grounded all flights so our film crew is driving 14 hours from Addis to Mekelle so we hope they'll arrive in time for our filming Friday! We'll be following Kindihafti, one of our Safe Motherhood Ambassadors, in action. We're also creating promotional materials - scarves for men and women, umbrellas and brochures, that will be used to continue to spread the word about how to prevent fistula and delivery safely. We should be attracting large crowds as film screenings and live dramas are pretty rare in these rural areas.
