Dear Friends, Sorry for the delay in writing. I arrived Mekelle Saturday morning and had limited internet until today. There was also a lot of catching up to do with our sixth class of Safe Motherhood Ambassadors who have been settling into our center since June 1st. They are so sweet, and are starting to relax, enjoying each others' company and working with our staff. I spoke with one woman, Kiros, who developed a fistula while delivering her 8th child and although she was cured and her husband did not divorce her, her community shunned her and she's been living an isolated life. We spoke at length because she still seems depressed but she said she's happy to be around other fistula survivors who can relate to her experience. Together with all the women we watched the UNICEF film we produced, "Fistula in Not A Curse" which follows the story of a woman with fistula. Many of our women were in tears and seemed quite moved while watching the story unfold. The story includes a Safe Motherhood Ambassador so they are quite motivated to continue their training. We served them an amazing lunch of Shiro (chickpeas mashed into a sauce with spices), rice and beef, even Ethiopian chips! |
