Desta and Abriha

Three out of four of 30-year-old Desta’s pregnancies resulted in the death of the baby. On her third she was in labor for 4 days before the baby died and she developed a fistula. It took three years before she was able to be cured at the Mekelle Fistula Hospital. Her husband stayed with her but his family treated her poorly, they are now dependent on farming and raising baby Bereket. Desta is learning sheeping skills her provide for her family. We believe, 17-year old Abriha, has developed fistula as result of rape. She has been cured but is clearly traumatized, living alone and has left school. Abriha is learning marketing skills to support herself. Being with the other women at the center during the training has helped her immensely.
