Every woman recovering from fistula needs help reintegrating back into their communities. Many of these women are young, illiterate, poor and have no skills to support themselves. Because of their fistula they have been abandoned by their husbands and in some cases their families leaving them isolated, depressed and often suicidal. They need psychological care, education and the means to be productive members of their communities post-surgery. After barely surviving childbirth and enduring years living with a fistula, these women have an intimate knowledge of their village’s most pressing health and environmental issues as well as the cultural barriers to providing basic and maternal health care. This program gives these women their lives back by giving them a purpose, a job and the opportunity to improve their villages and save lives.
